George B. Bigelow was the president from 1855-1866. The first layman to head the school, George B. Bigelow added to and improved its curriculum in English literature, modern history, higher mathematics, and advanced foreign languages. School enrollment was stimulated by the Civil War, resulting in the need for female teachers. In 1864, 173 female students were being instructed by Bigelow and six teachers. |
